Restore and planning

Backblaze B2 and Computer Backup are different products

Backblaze Computer Backup is a managed Mac and Windows backup service licensed per computer. Backblaze B2 is object storage billed by stored data and recovery activity. They solve different jobs, so this page declines to rank them on one price axis.

Put your own numbers through the calculator to see what this meter does to a normal month and to the day you restore.

The product boundary is per computer versus per GB

Backblaze Computer Backup installs on a Mac or Windows computer and is licensed at a fixed price per computer. Backblaze B2 exposes cloud object storage through S3-compatible and native APIs and expects a compatible application, integration, or backup tool to write the data. [2] [7]

The captured B2 offer charges $0.00695 per GB-month after its first 10 GB. Backblaze Computer Backup lists $99 per year for one computer. The first number buys storage capacity; the second buys a managed computer-backup service. Dividing or sorting those numbers without specifying stored volume and service scope would be dishonest. [5] [1]

This is a routing page, not a best online backup ranking. No consumer backup products were tested, and no object store can be treated as a managed endpoint-backup service merely because backup data can be placed in it. [2] [7]

Choose the job before comparing the bill

Choose Computer Backup when the source is an eligible Mac or Windows computer and the requirement is an installed service that automatically protects local user data. Confirm the documented exclusions before buying, especially for network shares, servers, system images, and archive-only use. [2] [4]

Choose B2 when the source is a NAS, server application, virtual environment, or other workload already supported by a named B2-compatible backup tool. B2 is the destination, not evidence that the chosen tool can protect or restore the workload. Verify the integration, retention behavior, and restore procedure in that tool's documentation. [8] [9]

Leave this comparison when the requirement is bare-metal recovery, SaaS account backup, database-aware recovery, or another workload that neither product documents as a complete service. Evaluate managed backup products that explicitly support that workload. This page has not tested them and does not rank them. [4] [8]

For B2, the recovery path can matter more than the storage rate

The captured B2 offer has no retrieval charge and makes Class A and Class B transactions free, but public-internet egress is free only up to three times monthly average storage and then costs $0.01 per GB. That allowance depends on the account's monthly storage and transfer, so unknown usage is never converted to zero. [5] [6]

Computer Backup exposes its own restore workflows, including web download, Save to B2, and shipped USB media. Those workflows are part of evaluating the managed service and are not the B2 public-internet egress meter. [10]

A B2 restore that only reads data can incur egress after the allowance, but it never incurs an early-deletion charge. The captured B2 offer has no minimum storage duration, and reading an object does not delete, overwrite, move, or transition it. [5] [6]

What this page refuses to claim

A lower displayed number does not make B2 a cheaper replacement for Computer Backup because B2 does not include the same backup workflow. A flat per-computer price does not make Computer Backup cheaper than B2 because the workload, stored volume, retention, and recovery path are unstated. [2] [7]

No winner is declared. The products become comparable only after the user specifies one supported workload, the required backup and restore behavior, retained volume, recovery volume, and all external tool or service costs. [4] [8]

Every figure above comes from one of these pages, on the date shown. Each numbered reference in the text links to its entry here. Vendors change prices; if a date looks old, check the source. Three vendors publish a machine-readable feed and the rest are re-checked by hand, which is why the dates are not uniform.
