Hetzner Object Storage costs more to keep than some vendors but less to get back: on a 10 TB backup it is the 9th cheapest of the 18 vendors with both bills for a normal month and the 6th cheapest for the month you restore everything.

Hetzner Object Storage costs more than most vendors in a normal month for a 2 TB NAS offsite copy, a 5 TB photo archive and a 100 TB compliance archive, and in the month you restore for a 100 TB compliance archive. The widest gap is a 100 TB compliance archive, a normal month: $896.91 at Hetzner Object Storage against $99.34 at Amazon S3 (S3 Glacier Deep Archive).

Amazon S3 Glacier Deep Archive: each file must be restored before you can download it, which takes up to 12 hours, and Amazon S3 bills each file for at least 180 days.

Oracle OCI Object Storage Archive: each file must be restored before you can download it (Oracle says the first byte comes back within an hour, but not when the whole file is ready), and Oracle bills each file for at least 90 days.

Questions buyers ask about Hetzner Object Storage

Can small objects push me above Hetzner's included storage?

Yes. Every object consumes at least 64 KB of billable storage. A repository with many small objects can cross the included 1,000 GB while its logical payload remains below that figure.

What does a Hetzner restore add, and is early deletion free?

PUT, GET, DELETE and retrieval are not charged separately, so outgoing traffic is the charge that decides a restore bill. Minimum storage duration and early-deletion rules are not published, so we do not assume an early delete or overwrite is free.

Can I use Hetzner as an immutable backup target in a US region?

Hetzner documents S3 Object Lock and a Veeam setup for its European Object Storage locations, but it has no US Object Storage region. Object Lock automatically enables versioning, which cannot then be disabled. A US-residency requirement makes this offer ineligible, not expensive.
