Google Cloud Storage pricing for backup storage

Google Cloud Storage has five captured classes in us-east1. Standard, Nearline, Coldline, and Archive share destination-aware network pricing but diverge sharply on retrieval, request rates, and minimum duration. Rapid is a separate zonal offer with hourly storage, ingress and read-transfer meters, extra operation classes, and no Always Free allowances.

Price your own workload against every vendor, including the worst-day restore and how long it takes to come back.

What the pricing page does not lead with

  • The 100 GiB egress allowance is destination-eligible, not universal.

Australia and China are excluded, and the allowance is scoped from eligible North American buckets to each eligible destination.

    Source, checked 2026-07-25T15:34:44Z
  • Nearline, Coldline, and Archive charge retrieval in addition to internet egress.

A restore can pay two per-byte meters plus requests.

    Source, checked 2026-07-25T15:34:44Z
  • A read-only restore never creates an early-deletion charge.

The 30, 90, and 365-day remainders require deletion, overwrite, movement, or transition of the source.

The rest of this vendor's non-obvious rules5 more
  • Nearline has a 30-day minimum, Coldline 90 days, and Archive 365 days; Standard and Rapid have no minimum duration.

Delete, replace, move, or rewrite before the class minimum charges the remaining duration. A read-only restore still does not trigger it.

    Source, checked 2026-07-26
  • Qualifying lifecycle and Autoclass movements can be exempt.

A generic transition flag is insufficient; the movement mechanism changes the bill.

    Source, checked 2026-07-26
  • Rapid does not receive Always Free allowances and has Class C and D operation meters.

Applying conventional GCS free tiers or an A/B-only model materially understates Rapid.

    Source, checked 2026-07-25T15:34:44Z
  • Rapid cross-region and CDN-specific treatment is not published in the captured row.

A destination-specific comparison must remain not published instead of reusing conventional GCS network pricing.

    Source, checked 2026-07-25T15:34:44Z
  • Always Free storage and operation allowances apply only in us-west1, us-central1, and us-east1, while Rapid is excluded.

data/providers.json captures only us-east1 for Google Cloud Storage. It cannot establish another region's price or extend US allowance eligibility to an uncaptured location.

Every class, and the rules that change its bill

5 classes captured for this vendor. Each rule below is a published condition that moves a real line on the bill, with the page it came from.

Standard8 rules

Frequently accessed online objects and backup repositories that should avoid retrieval and minimum-duration charges.

Published rules that move the bill for Standard
RuleValueWhy it moves the bill
StorageFirst 5 GiB free in the eligible us-east1 free-tier region, then $0.02 per GiB-monthThe storage allowance is region- and class-eligible, not a universal account credit.
Internet egress allowance100 GiB monthly from eligible North American buckets to each eligible destination; Australia and China excludedDestination eligibility decides whether the allowance is subtracted.
Internet egress tiers$0.12 per GiB through 10 TiB, $0.11 through 150 TiB, then $0.08The bands are graduated and destination-scoped.
Class A operations5,000 free monthly, then $0.005 per 1,000Write and list operations are billed separately from reads.
Class B operations50,000 free monthly, then $0.0004 per 1,000Restore GET and metadata calls can exceed the read allowance.
Retrieval and same-region movementnot chargedStandard has no retrieval meter; same-region movement must not be priced as public internet.
Minimum duration and early deletiondoes not applyStandard reads and mutations have no minimum-duration remainder.
Minimum billable object sizenot publishedNo small-object uplift is inferred.
Nearline6 rules

Data read about monthly, where lower storage cost can offset retrieval and higher operation prices.

Published rules that move the bill for Nearline
RuleValueWhy it moves the bill
Storage and retrieval$0.01 per GiB-month storage and $0.01 per GiB retrievedA full restore adds one month of storage-rate-equivalent retrieval.
Internet egressEligible 100 GiB allowance, then graduated $0.12, $0.11, and $0.08 destination tiersRetrieval and transfer are separate byte meters.
Class A and Class B operations5,000 A and 50,000 B free monthly, then $0.01 and $0.001 per 1,000Nearline request rates exceed Standard's.
Minimum storage duration30 days with a prorated early-deletion remainderDelete, overwrite, move, or transition can bill unused duration. A read-only restore cannot.
Lifecycle and Autoclass exceptionsconditional: qualifying provider-managed transitions are exempt from early-deletion chargesA managed transition and a buyer-driven mutation do not always receive the same duration result.
Minimum billable object sizenot publishedNo object-size floor is assumed.
Coldline6 rules

Quarterly or less frequent recovery data where lower storage cost offsets higher retrieval and request prices.

Published rules that move the bill for Coldline
RuleValueWhy it moves the bill
Storage and retrieval$0.004 per GiB-month storage and $0.02 per GiB retrievedA full restore costs five storage months in retrieval before egress.
Internet egressEligible 100 GiB allowance, then graduated $0.12, $0.11, and $0.08 tiersCold retrieval does not include public network transfer.
Class A and Class B operations5,000 A and 50,000 B free monthly, then $0.02 and $0.01 per 1,000Coldline reads can make request cost material for small objects.
Minimum storage duration90 days with a prorated early-deletion remainderRemoving young data can owe multiple months; restoring it without mutation cannot.
Lifecycle and Autoclass exceptionsconditionalQualifying managed movements can avoid the buyer-driven early-deletion result.
Minimum billable object sizenot publishedNo small-object uplift is added.
Archive6 rules

Long-lived backup data that needs online access semantics but is expected to be read rarely.

Published rules that move the bill for Archive
RuleValueWhy it moves the bill
Storage and retrieval$0.0012 per GiB-month storage and $0.05 per GiB retrievedThe lowest conventional GCS storage rate has the highest captured retrieval rate.
Internet egressEligible 100 GiB allowance, then graduated $0.12, $0.11, and $0.08 tiersArchive retrieval and internet egress both apply to the same restored byte.
Class A and Class B operations5,000 A and 50,000 B free monthly, then $0.05 per 1,000 for either classRequest-heavy archive restores can exceed both allowances.
Minimum storage duration365 days with a prorated early-deletion remainderA buyer-driven mutation can owe most of a year of remaining storage.
Lifecycle and Autoclass exceptionsconditionalProvider-managed movements must be distinguished from deletion, overwrite, or buyer-driven transition.
Minimum billable object sizenot publishedNo object-size floor is inferred.
Rapid9 rules

Zonal, very-low-latency storage when Rapid Bucket eligibility and per-operation economics are required.

Published rules that move the bill for Rapid
RuleValueWhy it moves the bill
Hourly storage$0.000150685 per GiB-hour, recorded as $0.11 per GiB-month at 730 hoursThe monthly figure is a transparent normalization of the official hourly rate.
Ingress and read transfer$0.0032 per GiB written in and $0.0006 per GiB readRapid charges byte movement in both directions; a read-only restore incurs read transfer but not ingress.
Class A and Class B operations$0.00113 and $0.0002 per 1,000 with no free allowanceRapid does not inherit conventional GCS request free tiers.
Class C and Class D operations$0.000625 and $0.00002 per 1,000 with no published free allowanceA/B-only models omit two bill-changing Rapid operation classes.
Always Free allowancesdoes not applyRapid explicitly receives none of the conventional storage, egress, or operation allowances.
Retrievalnot chargedThe per-byte recovery line is Rapid read transfer, not a separate cold retrieval fee.
Cross-region and CDN-specific transfernot publishedThe captured table publishes a universal read-transfer line but no separate cross-region add-on or CDN rule.
Minimum duration and early deletiondoes not applyRapid publishes no minimum retention.
Minimum billable object sizenot publishedNo small-object uplift is assumed.
