Amazon S3 Glacier Deep Archive: each file must be restored before you can download it, which takes up to 12 hours, and Amazon S3 bills each file for at least 180 days.

Oracle OCI Object Storage Archive: each file must be restored before you can download it (Oracle says the first byte comes back within an hour, but not when the whole file is ready), and Oracle bills each file for at least 90 days.

Questions buyers ask about Cloudflare R2

Is Cloudflare R2 egress really free?

Direct internet egress is not charged for both Standard and Infrequent Access. That removes only the network-transfer line. Storage, Class A operations, Class B operations, and Infrequent Access retrieval can still be billed.

What happens if I delete or overwrite R2 Infrequent Access data early?

Infrequent Access has a 30-day minimum and uses a prorated remainder after delete, overwrite, or transition. A read-only restore does not trigger that charge. Standard has no minimum duration.

What is the minimum monthly R2 bill?

Cloudflare publishes no fixed monthly fee or minimum billable capacity. Standard has monthly storage and request allowances; Infrequent Access starts billing storage and requests from the first unit. Cloudflare also rounds usage up to the next billing unit.

Can I use R2 as an immutable backup target?

R2 has native bucket-lock rules, but they are not comparable to S3 Object Lock. Cloudflare's S3 compatibility matrix marks Object Lock configuration, retention, legal hold, and governance-bypass operations as unimplemented. A tool that requires the S3 Object Lock API cannot configure R2 bucket locks through that API.
