What it costs to move backups to another vendor

Migration cost is the source-side receipt for reading every object, transferring it out, and deleting it after validation. The receipt keeps egress, retrieval, requests, temporary readable copies, and early deletion separate, and it stops at explicit states when a rate is not published.

Migration adds deletion to the restore-shaped read path

The copy phase looks like a full restore: inventory or LIST, archive restore when required, read or GET, retrieval, temporary readable-copy storage when published, and full public-internet egress. Migration then deletes the source after validation, which makes source delete requests and any unused minimum-duration remainder applicable. [1] [2]

The cost is directional. Switching from A to B uses A's exit profile; switching from B to A uses B's. Destination ingest is intentionally outside this source-exit receipt. [3] [4]

All 18 source vendors remain visible. The class-level profiles above preserve 61 captured offers, including non-USD, unpublished, conditional, stale, and unknown lines rather than ranking incomplete totals. [1] [9]

Egress is the first decision variable, but free egress is not a free migration. Retrieval, requests, temporary readable copies, and deletion before the minimum can become the deciding lines. [2] [16]

Eighteen vendors produce 306 ordered source-to-destination pairs after the 18 same-vendor rows are excluded. Each pair points to every captured source class and region, so a destination name never erases a source-side cold-tier or regional rule. [1] [18]

The direct internet path is the baseline. Pair-specific partner, CDN, same-provider, or private routes stay conditional or not published until the exact route is verified. [3] [1]

Free egress can still leave a migration bill

The worked receipts use explicit source-class inputs and leave destination ingest outside the total. They are examples, not universal quotes. Every rate comes from the captured provider record and every unresolved line stops the total. [3] [2] [4]

Backblaze's result changes at three times average storage. R2's result can be driven by operations, retrieval, and young-object deletion. Wasabi's result is numeric only inside the fair-use boundary because no excess rate is published. [3] [2] [4]

Disputed and absent rates do not become plausible totals

Current official pages can disagree with captured fields that move a migration receipt. The DigitalOcean Cold conflict was reconciled into the canonical record on 2026-07-29; unresolved AWS and Storj conflicts remain stale rather than being silently chosen. [19] [8] [14]

Rejected shortcuts are recorded separately. In particular, Wasabi policy excess is not published, an R2 zero-egress line does not erase request or retrieval charges, and a read-only restore does not receive the migration-only deletion remainder. [4] [2] [1]
