DigitalOcean Spaces pricing for backup storage

DigitalOcean Spaces Standard is a $5 bundle with 250 GiB of storage and 1 TiB of outbound transfer. Spaces Cold publishes a lower storage rate and a one-times-stored-volume retrieval allowance, but leaves its internet-egress rule, retrieval overage, request prices, and cold-only fixed fee unpublished. Those missing rules prevent a complete cold restore total.

Price your own workload against every vendor, including the worst-day restore and how long it takes to come back.

What the pricing page does not lead with

  • Standard's first 250 GiB is bundled into a $5 subscription; billing begins with the first bucket and is prorated hourly after all buckets are destroyed.

The bundle cannot be represented as $0 storage with no fixed fee, and a part-month subscription cannot be charged as an unconditional full month.

    Source, checked 2026-07-26
  • The current Spaces docs say subscription bandwidth pricing applies to both Standard and Cold: 1,024 GiB outbound is shared across buckets, then additional transfer is $0.01 per GiB, with named internal-network exceptions.

The checked price data still marks Cold egress as not published. The Cold bill stays out of date until that data is updated; it must not silently inherit or ignore the newer rule.

    Source, checked 2026-07-26
  • The current Spaces docs publish Cold retrieval at $0.01 per GiB and waive the fee up to average daily Cold Storage usage for the month.

data/providers.json still records only an allowance with a not published overage rate. The disagreement is stale data, not evidence that excess retrieval is free.

The rest of this vendor's non-obvious rules3 more
  • Request pricing is not published for either checked class.

A backup tool's request-bearing receipt remains incomplete even when storage and transfer arithmetic are known.

    Source, checked 2026-07-25T15:34:44Z
  • Cold objects have a 30-day minimum retention period; delete or update before day 30 creates a prorated remaining-duration charge, while the first 250 GiB of monthly early-deletion or update usage is free.

Overwrites count as delete plus recreate. A read-only restore does not activate this mutation-only line.

    Source, checked 2026-07-26
  • Cold objects smaller than 128 KiB are billed as 128 KiB, and every read carries a 128 KiB minimum retrieval charge.

Small-object backups can exceed both their logical storage and logical bytes read even when request pricing remains not published.

Published subtotal = $5.00 + (500 - 250) x $0.02 + (1,200 - 1,024) x $0.01 = $11.76. The scenario includes requests and a restore, but their rates or states are not published in the checked Standard material, so $11.76 is only a subtotal and the total remains not published.

The monthly retrieval allowance is 1 x 1,000 GiB stored = 1,000 GiB. The restore exceeds it by 1 GiB, but no overage rate is published. The egress rule is also unpublished. The read-only restore does not activate early deletion.

Published rules that move the bill for Spaces Standard Storage
RuleValueWhy it moves the bill
Standard subscription$5 per month including 250 GiB storageThe included zero-rate tier has a fixed fee and is not a free 250 GiB offer.
Storage overage$0.02 per GiB-month above 250 GiBCapacity above the subscription bundle adds a per-GiB line.
Outbound transfer1 TiB included monthly, then $0.01 per GiBA large direct restore can exceed the bundle even though normal backup traffic does not.
Class A and Class B requestsnot publishedThe checked official pricing material does not provide request rates, so a request-bearing restore cannot claim a complete total.
Retrievalnot published as a separate Standard meterThe page does not support either adding a retrieval rate or declaring it free.
Minimum object size, duration, and early deletionnot publishedThe page does not support a small-object or early-mutation dollar result.

Published rules that move the bill for Spaces Cold Storage
RuleValueWhy it moves the bill
Cold storage$0.007 per GiB-monthThe published per-GiB rate is usable, but the full invoice can still be blocked by unpublished fixed and restore meters.
Retrieval allowanceUp to 1x stored volume once per month is includedThe allowance follows stored volume rather than the Standard 1 TiB transfer bundle.
Retrieval overagenot publishedA restore above stored volume cannot be converted to a dollar line.
Internet egress allowance and overagenot publishedCold does not state that it inherits Standard's 1 TiB allowance or $0.01 per GiB overage.
Cold-only fixed fee or minimum capacitynot publishedThe page does not establish whether a cold-only bucket owes the Standard subscription minimum.
Class A and Class B requestsnot publishedRestore request counts cannot be priced from the checked page.
Minimum storage duration30 days; early-deletion method not publishedThe duration is known, but the source does not support an exact remainder calculation after early mutation.
Minimum billable object sizenot publishedNo small-object floor is inferred for Cold.
