Backup Storage Prices

Immutable backup storage for Veeam: which vendors qualify, and the year's bill

Prices checked · Veeam's requirements read

12 of 18 vendors sell object storage that Veeam Backup & Replication can make immutable, and the pages of 3 more leave it unconfirmed. For 10 TB of Veeam backups, OVHcloud Object Storage Infrequent Access costs least over a year with one full restore: $527.68, that is $40.59 a normal month and $81.19 the month you restore everything.

Your lock can last longer than you set it. Veeam gives every block written within one Block Generation the same lock expiry, which adds up to 30 days on Amazon S3 and Google Cloud and up to 10 days everywhere else. With an immutability period of 30 days, the value Veeam's settings start at, a block can stay locked, and billed, for up to 40 days (60 on Amazon S3 and Google Cloud). From version 13.0.1 P1, Veeam's default is to lock each backup for the job's whole retention period instead, plus the same Block Generation days; choose "For the minimum immutability period only" to set the days yourself. Scaleway Object Storage publishes its prices in euros; its bills are converted at $1.1193 per euro, the European Central Bank's reference rate of 23 October 2026.

"Locked up to" is an immutability period of 30 days plus Veeam's Block Generation days: how long a newly written block can stay locked when the backup job keeps backups for 30 days or less. A longer job retention locks for that retention plus the same Block Generation days. Lock modes as each vendor's documentation names them, read on 11 October 2026; which offers carry Object Lock, as checked on 26 July 2026.

The calculator opens on this workload with Object Lock required, ranked on a year with one restore; change the size, the changed data and the restore. It does not know which classes Veeam writes to, so its order can differ: check a class against the table above.

Vendors not on the list, and why

  • DigitalOcean Spaces: not confirmed. Its documentation names no Object Lock: ask the vendor before relying on it.
  • Tigris: not confirmed. Its documentation names no Object Lock: ask the vendor before relying on it.
  • Vultr Object Storage: not confirmed. Its pages leave Object Lock support unclear.
  • Cloudflare R2: has its own bucket retention rules, not S3 Object Lock, which Veeam needs to make a backup immutable.
  • Filebase: documents no Object Lock.
  • Oracle OCI Object Storage: has its own bucket retention rules, not S3 Object Lock, which Veeam needs to make a backup immutable.

An unconfirmed vendor is not ruled out: its own pages do not say enough to rank it. Write to its support before you build a repository on it.

Before you create the bucket

What Veeam's documentation asks for, in the order you meet it:

  1. Turn on Object Lock and versioning when you create the bucket: most vendors allow Object Lock only then, and Veeam says never to switch either on or off once the bucket is added to Veeam. Enabling immutability · Limitations
  2. Leave the bucket's default retention off. On S3 storage Veeam sets compliance-mode retention on every object it uploads itself. Limitations
  3. Add no lifecycle rules: Veeam manages the data itself, and Veeam says lifecycle rules can make backups and restores fail. So a lifecycle rule cannot move Veeam's blocks to a cheaper archive class later. General limitations
  4. On Amazon S3 pick Standard, Standard-IA or One Zone-IA; on Azure, the Hot or Cool tier; on Google Cloud, Standard, Nearline or Coldline. Amazon S3 · Azure · Google Cloud
  5. Keep the backup job's block size at 1 MB, the size Veeam recommends for object storage; smaller blocks mean more objects and more requests on the bill. General limitations
  6. Set immutability no longer than the job's retention: Veeam warns that a longer lock only adds charges. Limitations

How the bills are worked out

10 TB of Veeam backups kept; 1 TB of changed blocks uploaded each month; nothing downloaded in a normal month; all 10 TB downloaded over the internet the month you restore. Veeam saves each block as one object after compressing it, so how many objects 10 TB makes depends on your data. We take Veeam's own example, a 1 MB block compressed by half to 512 KB: about 19.1 million objects, 1.9 million uploads a month and 19.1 million reads to restore. Data that barely compresses makes fewer objects, down to half as many; data that compresses better makes more.

Each bill comes from the vendor's own published rates through the same engine as the calculator, checked on the date beside it. The month you restore adds reading every block back and downloading all 10 TB. Listing, metadata and retention calls are left out, and so is any early-deletion charge: how much Veeam deletes each month depends on your retention, so check each vendor's minimum storage period; the table notes it where it outlasts Veeam's lock.
