Backup storage that stays in the EU: which vendor costs least over a year with a restore

Prices checked

For 10 TB of backups kept in the EU, OVHcloud Object Storage Infrequent Access costs least over a year with one full restore: $576.40, that is $44.65 a normal month and $85.25 the month you restore everything. 10 of the 18 vendors we price are ranked below on the same bill.

Keeping it in the EU costs nothing extra at this size. The cheapest year anywhere is already in the EU: OVHcloud Object Storage Infrequent Access in France (Gravelines). 4 of the vendors below are ranked at the prices of the US region we check, because their own pages say their EU regions cost the same; each of those rows says so.

Run by a company based in the EU as well: 3 of the vendors below, OVHcloud Object Storage (France), Hetzner Object Storage (Germany), Scaleway Object Storage (France). The cheapest year here is one of them.

Where the data sits is not who runs the service. An EU region keeps your backups in the EU; the company that runs it can still be based elsewhere, and some vendors copy data out of the region if you turn on replication or a CDN. The residency guide shows each vendor's locations and what it puts in writing about keeping data in one place.

If the restore can wait: OVHcloud Object Storage Cold Archive costs $448.55 over the same year, but each file has to be restored before you can download it (ready within 2 days), so it suits a copy you hope never to need, not the backup you restore from first.

Vendors not on the list, and why

  • Akamai Cloud Object Storage: Akamai sells Object Storage in Frankfurt, Paris, Madrid, Milan, Amsterdam and Stockholm, but lists its prices region by region, and we have its US East prices only.
  • Cloudflare R2: Cloudflare can keep an R2 bucket inside the EU (its EU jurisdiction), but its pricing page does not say whether such a bucket costs the same.
  • DigitalOcean Spaces: DigitalOcean sells Spaces in Amsterdam and Frankfurt and says bandwidth costs the same in every region, but does not say storage does, and we have its New York prices only.
  • Filebase: Its offer here places data worldwide, and it publishes no price for keeping data in the EU only.
  • Google Cloud Storage: Google prices each bucket location separately, and we have its South Carolina prices only.
  • Storj: Its offer here places data worldwide, and it publishes no price for keeping data in the EU only.
  • Tigris: Tigris keeps a bucket in Amsterdam and Frankfurt as a EUR multi-region bucket, which its pricing page lists apart from the global placement we compare.
  • Vultr Object Storage: Vultr does not say whether Object Storage costs the same in every location, and we have its New Jersey prices only.

How the bills are worked out

10 TB of backups kept in an EU region as 1 million objects of 10 MB on average; 500,000 uploads and 2 million reads a month; 1 TB downloaded over the internet in a normal month; all 10 TB downloaded the month you restore, which reads all 1 million objects back.

Each bill comes from the vendor's own published rates through the same engine as the calculator, checked on the date beside it, including any lower rate a vendor publishes for larger volumes. The month you restore adds reading every object back and downloading all 10 TB. No early-deletion charge is counted: what you delete each month depends on your retention, so check each vendor's minimum storage period.
